A simple system for organising your downloaded videos

RamRom blog · 21 October 2026

Everyone's downloads folder tells the same story: "video(1).mp4", "video(2).mp4", and no memory of what any of them are. If you download videos regularly — your own uploads, tutorials, references — a tiny bit of structure saves real time later.

One folder, sorted by month

Create a single folder called Saved Videos. Inside it, one subfolder per month: 2026-10, 2026-11, and so on. Month folders sort themselves automatically, grow gently, and answer the most common question — "when did I save that?" — at a glance.

Name files like headlines

Rename each file as you save it, in this pattern: platform - creator - short title. For example: tiktok - mykitchen - 5-minute pasta trick.mp4. Thirty seconds of typing now beats ten minutes of scrubbing through thumbnails later. Your future self says thanks.

Creators: keep a "mine" folder

If you post videos yourself, keep your own uploads in a separate top-level folder, apart from videos you saved from others. It keeps ownership obvious (useful if you ever need to prove a video is yours) and makes reposting or re-editing your back catalogue painless. Our backup guide covers the routine.

The two-minute weekly tidy

Once a week, move new downloads out of the default downloads folder into the right month folder, rename the vague ones, and delete duplicates and anything you no longer need. Small, regular tidying is what makes the system stick — a yearly "big clean" never happens.

Mind the size

HD videos add up fast: a one-minute clip can be 10–30 MB. Check your Saved Videos folder size every couple of months. Phone filling up? Move older months to a computer or cloud storage and keep only recent favourites on the device.
