YouTube Downloader
Download YouTube videos and Shorts, or save just the audio. Paste a link below and pick a format — nothing to install, no account needed. YouTube downloads come with real technical limits, and this page explains them plainly so you are never guessing why a button says what it says.
How to download a YouTube video
Copy the video link
In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link. On desktop, copy the address from the browser bar — Shorts links work too.
Paste the link
Paste it into the box above and tap Download. The tool lists every format YouTube makes available for that video.
Pick a format
Choose video with sound, HD video-only, or audio. Read the quality notes below first so the choice makes sense.
Why video with sound tops out at 360p
This is the single most confusing thing about YouTube downloads, so here it is straight. YouTube stores video in two ways:
- Muxed streams — video and audio combined in one file. YouTube only publishes these up to about 360p.
- Adaptive streams — video and audio as separate streams. This is where the 720p, 1080p and higher versions live — but the video streams have no sound, and the audio streams have no picture.
So when the tool offers you "video with sound", the best it can usually give is a 360p muxed file — that is all YouTube publishes in that form. The HD options are video-only by design, not by a limitation of this tool. Merging an HD video stream with its audio into one file needs video-processing software on a server, which plain web hosting cannot run — which is why many downloader sites quietly skip it or fake it.
There is no MP3 on YouTube
YouTube's audio streams are M4A or Opus — MP3 files simply do not exist on their servers. Sites that offer "YouTube to MP3" are converting the audio on their own servers before giving it to you. RamRom does not do that conversion, so the button says Audio (M4A) and means it. M4A plays on every modern phone, tablet and computer, and for most listening it is indistinguishable from an MP3 at the same quality.
How YouTube downloads reach you
YouTube's file servers refuse requests from data-centre servers like the one hosting this site — they return empty responses to hosting IPs. So for YouTube links, the tool hands the download address directly to your browser instead of proxying the file through the site. In practice this means your download starts straight from YouTube's servers to your device, which is usually faster anyway. The format list, titles and thumbnails still come through the tool; only the final file transfer goes direct.
What about Shorts?
YouTube Shorts are ordinary YouTube videos with a /shorts/ address. Paste the link and everything above applies identically: 360p with sound, HD video-only, M4A audio. If you want a deeper walkthrough, see our blog post on downloading YouTube Shorts and videos.
What cannot be downloaded
- Private and unlisted videos you do not have access to — the tool sees what a logged-out visitor sees.
- Age-restricted videos that require a login.
- Rental/purchase content such as YouTube movies behind a paywall.
- Live streams while broadcasting — once the stream ends and YouTube publishes the recording, the link works normally.
If a link does not work
- Use the full link: Share → Copy link gives the cleanest address. Links copied from embeds or playlists sometimes confuse the lookup.
- Check the video is public: open it in a private window without logging in. If it asks you to sign in, the tool cannot reach it either.
- Wait and retry: YouTube changes its internals regularly, and the lookup service occasionally needs a few minutes to catch up.
A note on rights
Downloading does not transfer any rights. Creators own their videos — save them for personal offline viewing, and do not re-upload someone else's work as your own. YouTube Premium's own offline feature exists for the same reason; this tool is for the cases it does not cover, like saving a file you can keep and move between devices.
Frequently asked questions
Why does video with sound top out at 360p?
YouTube stores high-quality video and audio as separate streams. The combined video-with-sound files YouTube publishes are usually capped around 360p. HD video exists only as video-only streams, which is why HD downloads have no sound.
Can I download YouTube audio as MP3?
No — YouTube does not serve MP3 files. Its audio streams are M4A or Opus. RamRom labels the button "Audio (M4A)" honestly instead of pretending to convert to MP3.
Can I download YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste a Shorts link and it is handled like any other YouTube video, with the same quality options.
Do I need an app or an account?
No. The downloader runs in your browser on phone, tablet and computer — no install, no sign-up.
